The pie chart illustrates four principal causes of farmland becoming degraded in the world today. Globally, 65 percent of degradation is caused by animal grazing and trees removal, constituting 35 percent and 30 percent respectively. A further 28 percent of degradation is due to over cultivation of crops. Other causes account for only 7 percent.

It is clear that during the 1990s these causes affected the presented regions differently, with Europe having 9.8 percent of agricultural land suffering from deforestation. In stark contrast, the impact of tree clearance on Oceania and North America was insignificant, with 1.7 percent and 0.2 percent of land affected respectively. Of equal note is that Oceania, with the highest percentage of farmland degraded due to animal grazing, did not experience any damage to agricultural land caused by over-cultivation, whereas it was more marked in North America and Europe, with 3.3 percent and 7.7 percent respectively.

If we compare the overall percentage of land degraded in the all three regions, we see that Europe, having as much as 23 percent of degradation, suffered more than North America and Oceania, having 18 percent of degradation collectively.
